Evan Rhea, a student at Iowa State, presents his Week 1 submission for the Launch Into AI competition. The competition’s goal is to create a functional app that focuses on data visualization using AI tools, rather than polished aesthetics.

Key highlights include:

  • AI Tool Utilization: Evan combined GitHub Copilot with GPT’s Codex to build the app. He used Copilot’s agent feature to plan and write the markdown file with instructions.

  • App Development and Portability: The app is built with Python and FastAPI, using CSV and JSON files for data, and a React frontend. Initially built on Windows, Evan used Codex to transcribe the code to a Mac-friendly setup for recording the video.

  • App Demonstration: Calorie Tracker: Evan demonstrates a calorie tracker app where users can upload CSV or JSON files. The app then visualizes the data through a bar chart and a line chart, showing calories consumed versus calories burnt. The app is simple, functional, and built entirely with AI tools.
