“In the fields of observation, chance favors only the prepared mind.” // Louis Pasteur
This post explores upcoming look and feel updates to the Island V4.1. Graphic upgrades came about because I saw a lot of other parts of these systems from different corners of the internet and then had a couple good ideas after a solid night’s rest. An upcoming update to Island V4 will feature these graphic upgrades, and more as my token reset counters get lifted.
The graphic updates include fun little cosmetic tweaks, such as grass that bends over as you drive over it. The graphic improvements cover all three islands, and the biggest change would probably be Emberglass Island (the volcano island). It would have taken me a decade to get this far one night a week chipping away at this.
Lava Island
The lava island of Emberglass is still in the works. You can make sense of the ideas I’m working with in this screenshot. There will be steam, magma flows, and dust flowing about. The particle steam I’m not thrilled about. The volcano island still has more work that needs done.

I’m a big fan of little artistic details while playing a game. This includes even little, free web experiments. This is why while driving around the island your tank treads will kick up dust. It’s a fun little thing that makes driving on the island feel more real and interesting.
Tidelight Island

Tidelight island is a shallow clone of Canopy right now. I have some lighthouse sized plans for this one. For now, we wait on the token counters to reset and then I’ll get back to building out the next iteration of the island. It’s looking pretty sharp.
Lesson from this build
The techniques used in this build required pushing the existing build in a direction that even the coding agent said “Look man, this is going to be a lot of work'“. The thing is, AI and Human alike don’t have a sense of what “a lot of work” even means any more. In the old world before AI, having a fully rigged robot, with drone helper, NPCs, multiple islands, bosses, game mechanics and it looks visually interesting-this is a scope of work that I would never have had the time to do. Now in a few hours on a given night I can send the coding agents to work and come back to a little closer iteration realizing the current vision.
The biggest insights though come from two places. First, I’ve been stacking an idea swipe file. Content authors do this just to have things to write about. I’ve not yet found myself short of things to say. What I need the swipe file for instead is to remember to push these tools further than I am.
Second, a good night’s sleep does wonders. Truly, a lot of my better ideas are often within the first hour or so of waking up. It’s like I have a direct antenna to “Source” (however you want to define it) and those ideas just map out nicely into the project.
The broader point here is that your project improves because of your exposure to ideas and providing a mechanism for your mind to synthesize those ideas together. If you’re twisting the idea sponge in hopes of one or two more drips of good ideas without ever having dunked it into the well? It’s not going to go how you think.
