A blade, a jump rope, and a deck of flashcards.

Most of this site runs on a keyboard. This part runs on legs, lungs, and attention. It holds my épée record, the workouts I post on Advisory Hour, and my notes on how I learn.

Fencing · Épée

Gold in 2023. Silver in 2025.

I fence épée. On July 15, 2023, I took gold at the Iowa Games, the state’s amateur sports festival. In 2025 I came back and took silver.

That second year, WHO13 Des Moines pulled me off the strip for an interview. I was still in my whites with my glove half off.

The fencing page has the medals, the TV clip, bouts from USA Fencing national events, and a playing card made in 2025. When you get turned into a card, it goes on the website.

Saturday Workout Scheme

Five minutes of active stretching. Then three rounds on a balance board, a jump rope, and a half-dome balance trainer (BOSU). It ends with a 24-12-6 strength set, plus 3 more reps if you have gas left.

Two days of high-rep sets for legs, chest, back, arms, and core, with a one-mile finish. The plan says it plainly: this one is not for beginners.

Cognition: Anki Flashcards

Anki is one of the most used apps on my phone. This post covers the shared decks that make it click, and why a habit needs a real chance before you judge it.

Cognition: Metabolizing the Slop

What happens when AI writes code faster than I can learn it? This essay connects that question to practice, memory, and the work of understanding software.

Writing · May to September 2026

I went back to writing my own words.

I caught myself letting AI write its own prompts, so I started writing my posts by hand again. This page collects what I learned, from Minto’s pyramid to the habit at 200 posts.

Before you try any of it

These are my experiments, not medical advice.

What works for my body and brain may not work for yours. I write down what I tried and what happened.

The question I care about is simple: does a practice help with learning, focus, recovery, or staying strong over the long run? Try things carefully, and keep what earns its place.
